Russia, Iran call for ‘energy club’ of Asian states

June 15
nuclear iran--Russia and Iran, two of the world’s largest oil and gas producers, propose setting up an ‘‘energy club’’ with China and four central Asian states to strengthen regional corporation and development.

‘‘It’s useful for us to establish an energy club and study the strengthening of cooperation in the field of transportation,’’ Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a speech to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s annual summit on Thursday.

The group is gathering in a cordoned-off area in Shanghai’s financial district to talk about economic prospects. The six member and four observer countries in the group account for 23% of the world’s oil reserves. Observers include Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is engaged in a standoff with the US and European Union over the country’s nuclear programme.
