Direct talks with U.S. preferable to negotiations with Europe: analyst

nuclear iran- Iran has announced it is prepared to negotiate with Europe on its nuclear program but will not accept any preconditions for the talks.
The Mehr News Agency talked with some political analysts on Wednesday to learn their views on the matter.



International affairs analyst Ali Khorram said that Iran-Europe talks would only serve as a “palliative” rather than a “cure” to the nuclear crisis.



He noted that Iran’s nuclear program would not have been such a big deal if it had not been made so complicated over the past three years through the political machinations of the U.S.



Europe, Russia, and China all know that Iran’s nuclear dossier is not at the level to be studied at the UN Security Council and believe that Iran and the U.S. should resolve the issue, Khorram opined.



“The U.S. is only seeking to overthrow the Islamic system in Iran, and its policy toward Iran’s nuclear program follows the same goal.”



He noted that Iran can only resolve the nuclear issue through resolving its political problem with the U.S., but added that the conditions are not ripe for direct talks between Tehran and Washington.



Khorram stated that agreeing to negotiate with Europe without any precondition is one way to escape from the current crisis, adding that talks with Europe will encourage Russia and China to provide more support to Iran.



The Europeans certainly do not want Iran’s nuclear dossier to be led down the path that Washington desires, but they will not make any decision against the U.S. in the international arena, he observed.



“Therefore, Iran-Europe talks will not be fruitful unless talks between Tehran and Washington are held.”



Political analyst Ali Karami said that the agreement between Iran and Europe to hold talks without any preconditions shows that both sides seek to resolve the issue through dialogue rather than within the framework of the UN Security Council.



He noted that the continuation of research activities on uranium enrichment is a national demand which cannot be renounced, adding that Iran will not back down on its rights and stands firm on its nuclear red lines.



International affairs analyst Amir Mohebbian said that holding direct talks with the U.S. is preferable to negotiating with Europe without preconditions.



“Experience has shown that in negotiations with Iran, the Europeans only seek to obtain guarantees from Iran but are not prepared to give any guarantees themselves,” he observed.



Mohebbian stressed the need to make use of skilled diplomats and the art of diplomacy in nuclear talks.
